  • What is a Tented Safari Camp?
A tented safari camp offers a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience that brings you closer to nature without sacrificing comfort. Our camp features spacious, well-appointed tents with cozy bedding, outdoor showers, air conditioning, and eco-friendly amenities, ensuring you have everything you need for a relaxing stay while surrounded by the stunning wilderness.
  • Where is your camp located?
Our camp is located within a private game reserve that shares an open boundary with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest and most iconic wildlife conservation areas, covering over 19,000 square kilometers (approximately 4.5 million acres). The nearest town to the camp is Phalaborwa which is situated 523 km (325 miles) northeast of Johannesburg. Nestled in the heart of the bushveld, our camp offers an immersive safari experience, surrounded by stunning landscapes and the opportunity to encounter extraordinary wildlife in its natural habitat.
  • What is the closest airport to the camp?
The closest airport to our camp is Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS), located approximately 70 km (44 miles) from the camp. It is a convenient regional airport with both domestic and charter flights. From there, we will pick you up to take you to the camp. Alternatively, you can rent a car if you prefer to drive yourself. Please let us know your arrival details in advance so we can assist with your transfer arrangements.
  • What should I pack for my stay?
Packing Essentials: Pack light, breathable clothing for the day and warmer layers for cooler evenings. Don’t forget: - Comfortable hiking-type boots - A hat and sunglasses - Camera/binoculars for wildlife viewing - Personal toiletries, including sunscreen - A flashlight or headlamp (we provide camp lighting) - A light, waterproof jacket (seasonal) - Malaria prevention meds (if applicable) & mosquito repellent Clothing & Scent Tips: Wear neutral colors like khaki, beige, or olive green to blend in with the bush. Avoid bright colors, perfumes, or strong-scented lotions, as they can deter wildlife. If you forget anything most essentials are available in town.
  • Do you have WiFi or cellular service at the camp?
We are committed to offering an authentic wilderness experience, which includes limited connectivity. While Wi-Fi is available at the camp, please note that the signal can be intermittent. Similarly, cellular service may be unreliable in certain areas. For better connectivity, we recommend obtaining a local eSIM for your stay. We encourage you to take this opportunity to disconnect and fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the environment.
  • Is it safe to stay at the camp?
Yes, your safety is our top priority. Our staff is highly trained to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. We follow strict safety protocols for all safari activities, including wildlife viewing, and our camp is equipped with security measures. Guests are asked to follow all safety guidelines and instructions provided by our guides. Please be aware that we are located in a wildlife-rich area, and while we take every precaution, there is always some risk associated with being in nature.
  • How can I book a stay at the camp?
You can book your stay by emailing us at shongololotsc@gmail.com or call us at +27 63 302 7267 (WhatsApp is recommended).
  • Is there a minimum or maximum length of stay?
We have no strict minimum or maximum length of stay, but most guests typically stay between 5 and 7 nights. Longer stays are available upon request, and we’d be happy to accommodate your preferred duration depending on availability.
  • Is the camp family-friendly?
We welcome families, though for safety reasons, we recommend that children be at least 10 years old to stay with us. If you’re traveling with children, please let us know and we’ll be happy to provide further details to ensure a comfortable and safe experience for your family.
  • Will I see wildlife during my stay?
While we cannot guarantee wildlife sightings (as animals move freely in their natural habitat), our location is rich in wildlife, and we have a high rate of sightings on game drives and walking safaris. Our expert guides are skilled in tracking and spotting animals, and we do everything we can to maximize your chances of experiencing the incredible wildlife in the area.
  • What is "The Big 5"?
"The Big 5" refers to five of Africa's most iconic and sought-after wildlife species: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. Originally, these animals were considered the most challenging to hunt on foot but today they represent the ultimate safari experience. Spotting all five during your stay is a thrilling highlight for any safari enthusiast!
  • Are there any dangerous animals I should be aware of?
Yes, while wildlife viewing is an exciting part of the experience, we must remind guests that we are in an area that is home to potentially dangerous animals such as elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, venomous snakes, and scorpions. We will provide safety briefings and ensure that you are always in safe areas and under supervision. Please follow all safety instructions and camp rules to minimize risk.
  • Do I need travel insurance?
While travel insurance is not mandatory, we strongly recommend that all guests have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or damaged luggage. This is especially important when traveling to remote areas where access to medical facilities may be limited such as our camp.
  • What activities can I book during my stay?
Your stay includes two thrilling game drives each day—one at sunrise to catch the early morning action, and another at dusk to witness the magic of the evening. But the adventure doesn’t stop there! We offer a variety of exciting, optional activities, including guided bush walks, tours of the local endangered species and reptile centers, an unforgettable interactive experience with a tame hippopotamus, hot air ballooning for breathtaking views, and a relaxing river cruise. For the ultimate safari experience, we can also arrange game drives and overnight camping in the heart of Kruger National Park. All activities are subject to availability and should be booked at least 48 hours in advance.
  • What level of fitness is needed to participate in activities?
Our safari activities are designed to be accessible to guests of varying fitness levels; however, we recommend that participants be in good health, particularly for activities such as walking safaris. Please be aware that the nearest medical facility is located at least 30 minutes away. If you have any concerns regarding your ability to participate, we encourage you to consult with us prior to booking. We will make every effort to accommodate your needs and ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all guests.
